A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said, when a man becomes a father, decreased levels of the hormone testosterone. Then, what is the impact of the decline?
Dr. Lee Gettler, scientists from Northwestern University, conducted a study of testosterone levels in 624 male Filipinos aged 21 years. After five years as a father, their testosterone levels dropped dramatically to 34 percent. The largest decrease occurred in those who frequently spend time with children.
According to Dr. Gettler, something had changed when a man becomes a father who is active thereby contributing to the decline in testosterone.
While Peter Gray, an expert of Anthropology at the University of Nevada argues, "A father with low testosterone levels will be more sensitive to cues from infants compared to cues from the opposite sex".
Nevertheless, the decline does not affect male libido. On the contrary, in many cases of men feel happier. Christopher Kuzawa, Anthropology at Northwestern University experts also emphasized, "You do not need a lot of testosterone to have a libido". (NPR / Agung Dwi Cahyadi)
